Do you have the weekly horror I do of cleaning out the toliet every week? Do you just hate the mess, dripping and who knows what else! Bzz Agent was so great to tip me off to the latest in toliet cleaning technology with the Scrubbing Bubbles One Step Toliet Bowl Cleaner. After completely scouring my husbands bathroom I hooked this little foot levered device up to his toliet and waited. I knew within a matter of 48 hours it would be a grimey yukky mess. I showed him and my child how to use the foot levered sprayer that spritzes a generous dose of lovely smelling toliet bowl cleaner in a 360 degree pattern inside the toliet bowl. One 2 second push and the whole toliet gets cleaned. Wouldn't it be nice if it really worked AND if they really remembered to do it I thought to myself. So, day 3 I crept in to see what was going on in the bathroom. I was really shocked to see that the toliet was completely sparkling clean. Not just pretty clean, but there was a lovely, non-chemical smell and the bowl looked like it had been freshly scrubbed. Unbelievable. I asked my husband how many times he used it and he said 2 times since it was first put in, so about every other day. Thank you Scrubbing Bubbles for delivering something to make our housework easier and our homes cleaner and fresher! For about a $10 initial investment you can have the foot levered device and a couple of cans of the insertable cleaner. Cheaper than maid service!

When I received my NatureLuxe samples of Foundation and Lip Balm Gloss it came at the perfect time to really put it to the test...Easter weekend! On Saturday, we were out of the house by 6:30 for the 1st of 3 Easter egg hunts, later it was a stage show, followed by an evening event. As I put on the NatureLuxe foundation I was a bit apprehensive not knowing what the texture or durability would be, being a first time user. It was all or nothing at 5:30am so this stuff had better have staying power. Immediately I was impressed by the soft, silky finish as the foundation glided over my skin covering all the unevenness, yet feeling soft and light at the same time. Yes, you can have full coverage that is light and radiant. It made me want to touch my skin it felt so soft. So far so good. Once I was outside I checked the finish in natural lighting and the color was beautiful, not too orangey or pink, just a beautiful tan that blended perfectly. Every couple of hours I was checking for lasting durability and it was there. At 4pm it still looked remarkably good after being on almost 12 hours. Although it is an oil free product it never left me feeling dried out or powdery, creeping into fine lines or wrinkles. It was very, very impressive and the price is fantastic at less than $15 with tax! I have used every kind of foundation from $5 to $50 and this is truly one of the most impressive products I have found for the money. Now, on to the Lip Gloss Balm. At first, the intense red was a little off putting as I thought wow, I am not really brave enough on most days to use something 'that bright'. However, the 'balm' portion made it go on in a sheer, naturally blushed red lip color, not intense or bright at all! Best of all, it has a sugar cookie, buttery scent (making me want to reapply often!) and the texture is moist and soft. Honestly, one of the best textures I have ever experienced and the color and moisture last. I seriously wanted to rush right out and buy it in every color. That is not something I usually want to do so I can truly say that CoverGirl has totally impressed me with these new products and I have absolutely NOTHING negative to say about them, only praises!

Creamy, rich, that is the first thing that comes to mind when your taste buds burst with excitement from the Spinach & Artichoke Greek Yogurt Veggie Dip from Otria. It's a little hard to track down in the produce coolers but once you do it is not a disappointment. It is far better than french onion or ranch dip and creamier and more flavorful than any other Spinach Dip or Spinach/Artichoke dip I have ever tried, seriously. I love the fact it is loaded with extra protein from the Greek Yogurt and is super low in calories. Bet your guests will ask what your recipe is!

Sometimes we take a lot for granted, our lovely homes, possessions, even the health and lives we enjoy. This actual aerial video footage of the tsunami moving in on Japan is incredible. Watching the food channel a few weeks ago I saw a great clip on Popcorn Girl in Las Vegas. This is not your 'touristy' Las Vegas Strip kind of place. It is located northwest of all the lights in Summerlin, a residential neighborhood. If you love popcorn then you will be out of your mind in this store! Popcorn girl has tons of flavors! You can get them by themselves or blended together 2 or 3 at a time. If you just can't decide then go for the Cornfetti which includes all the fruity flavors. Their flavors are so realistic and the corn texture is perfect. You can go in person next time you are in Vegas or they do mail order. Skip Garrett's and the Popcorn Factory and go for the good stuff. It makes a very unusual, welcomed gift!

Betcha didn't know that the London designer Burberry had come out with a complete makeup line! It's not carried at the exclusive boutique on Michigan Avenue either, but rather at the all affordable Nordstrom North Bridge downtown Chicago. I have to tell you, makeup is kind of makeup in the department store category, however, Burberry is different. Why spend $30 on mascara when you can go to Walgreen's and get it for $9? How about NEVER a clump, always glides on perfectly each and every time! You got it! Everytime, no clumps, no problems, notta. You will love the product and the hematite plaid packaging. So chic, so amazing and soooo affordable! Their shadows are lovely as well in square magnetic, hematite packing emblazoned with the signature shadow Burberry plaid. They glide on with the greatest of ease and are less than $30 each! The foundation has to be one of the best on the market, seriously. It has silicone in it and sits beautifully on your skin and looks just as good at 8pm as it did when you put it on at 8am. Again, a price you can afford in a huge, chic bottle, under $50. I got Ralph for my makeup artist and he was fabulous, knowledgeable and NOT a pushy sale. But this stuff is so wonderful he didn't have to suggest anything, I wanted it anyway. The lip and eye pencils are extra long and a unique square shape. You can now own Burberry without spending a fortune (by the way you can have lunch in the cafe afterwards, a real mom treat!).

Kid City is an indoor, year round play area for children birth through 6 or 7 that offers numerous stimulated vignettes. The first hurdle is figuring out how to get into the place if you are a first time visitor. When you get to their front door it is locked - round the clock (great for safety). There isn't a sign, arrow, anything that tells you that you need to press the small white button to the left of the door in order for them to come and unlock the door and let you in. Not good if it is raining or snowing and your have your arms loaded with baby and toddler in tow. Once you come in you place your shoes on mats and continue on to the cashier station. The place where you leave your shoes can be very wet so you and your child end up spending the rest of your time in cold, soaking wet socks, so bring extras. The decor is adorable with a free standing small fire house, a tea and dress up room, a movie theater, generic play center with blocks and other activities, and a parents room with couches. There is a train table and a video viewing area as well. There is no way a child will be bored here. There is a kitchen area for a snack with your children. On the clean scale it was pretty good. Plan on spending a few hours but you may still get a child that isn't ready to go home when it is time to leave!

Time Out Chicago REALLY Hit it on the Head! Beard Papa is the 'light as air' delicacy unlike anything you have EVER had stateside unless you have found a true Frenchman behind the dough at the local bakery. Didn't someone think to tell the Japanese that this isn't necessarily a great translation - Beard Papa. A WHAT? One try and you WILL KNOW! Luscious, light, a hint of sweet, smooth, creamy, some even with Chocolate. You just thought you loved red velvet cupcakes! This is your new addiction! Good thing they are open early and late and serve coffee too!

A cream puff is not a cookie. It is not a cake, a pie or a doughnut. I say this because those of you who think you know the pain of craving your favorite dessert can’t begin to understand the plight of the cream-puff lover. Because even gas stations sell cookies. Walgreens sells cake by the slice. Pie is in every diner in Chicago, and thanks to Dunkin’, doughnuts have saturated our landscape. You people can get your fix anywhere. Us cream-puff freaks? We’re stuck sneaking éclairs from grocery-store bakeries, making do with cream puff’s kissing cousin with its instant-pudding filling and gritty chocolate frosting (I’m looking at you, Jewel).

But no longer. Beard Papa’s, the ten-year-old Japanese chain that has nailed this French staple, first brought its puffs to the States via Manhattan’s Upper West Side, and now Chicago has one. It’s conveniently located between the El’s Red and Blue Lines in the Block 37 pedway, but make no mistake: These puffs are not portable. The outer layer of the fist-sized puff is as flaky as your Grandma’s best pie crust, with a dusting of powdered sugar to add to the assault on dark clothing. Beyond the brilliantly airy cocoon of choux pastry lies vanilla custard cream, enough that once the shell is broken, walking and eating is out of the question. A bag of travel-friendly mini puffs could suffice, but you’ll lose the proper pastry-to-cream ratio. Chocoholics will swoon over the “éclair” version of the minis, each puff entirely enrobed in a dark-chocolate shell, but for us diehard cream-puff fans, the chocolate overpowers; ditto for options like strawberry or chocolate custard filling. When you’ve waited this long, it’s the classic or nothing—unless BP sends out a tweet that green-tea filling is on tap, in which case get out of my way.

I would guess that the majority of readers don't know about Make A Messterpiece located in The Glen in Glenview, IL. It opened in late September on the very end of the center, just a stones throw from Kohl's Children's Museum. Make A Messterpiece is a huge 'art studio oriented' play place for children, sponsored by Proctor and Gamble and Bounty Paper Towels (thus the "mess" terpiece). The first issue I have with them is that they NEVER answer their phone, nor do they return phone calls! Second, the price is almost as costly as going to Six Flags for the day. They say the entry fee is $10, however, all that covers is the entry fee, a small slide/climbing play area and a couple of tables with paper, crayons and some paint. Your child will never be happy with just that when there are 5 exciting, colorful studios in front of them and other children participating for the cost of $35 total ($5 for each activity, NOT INCLUDING the item they may paint in the scheduled session). So, for a family with three kids that comes to a total of $105! Are you kidding me?! Who in their right mind is going to pay that much for a few hours of fun? Perhaps once a year, but if you have more than one child it is extremely cost prohibitive. The check in line takes forever (even in a adults mind) as the cashier has to go into their 5 minutes schpeil of how the center works. Most parents buy it all out of nothing more than sheer confusion. Yes, there is a sitting area for parents while your child takes studio classes, but I an sit at Starbucks for less than $2! Some of the studio offerings are a giant colored bubble producing machine, a 'cook your own treat section', and other 'art related' sessions. Even their website is vague (makeamessterpiece.com). You can't tell what it is or how much it is. Don't they know parents want MORE INFORMATION! The staff is generally college age and clueless but super nice. Shame on Proctor and Gamble. If you want to go, you had better go quickly because this place won't last long!

You won't find a cleaner or more highly accredited day care in the area that is this affordable. The teachers are all superb and parents say "my child is never ready to come home in the afternoon even after spending all day at Concordia", "I have never seen two children squabbling in all the times I have been at Concordia. By far the newest and probably most exciting Children's Museum in the Chicago area, Kohl's offers a bright and exciting experience for your family. Located on the North end of The Glen in a separate complex, Kohl's has an ever changing array of special activities along with their standard hands on fun like Potbelly make believe sandwich station, the automotive area, the pin cushion form section (my favorite), weather permitting an outdoor activity station and much, much more. It is clean, all on one level and loaded with so many activities you can easily make a full day of it. There is a fantastic Cosi restaurant to relax in and catch a bite to eat between activities. There are lots of ways to do Legoland in The Streets of Woodfield, Schaumburg. You can be the non-researching aimless parent who just shows up and pays full price for you and your 3 kids ($19 for you, $15 for each child) or you can spend a little time searching for their coupons/deals and save yourself a BUNDLE. Legoland always has 'FREE entry with one paid entry' coupons. They can be found in WHERE magazines, in brochure stands in hotels and tourist areas, on the internet and in some newspapers. They are everywhere if you just look. You get one just for visiting the Polar Express Santa in Woodfield Mall. The best deals are to be found on the offical Legoland website. As of today their annual pass (come as often as you like any day of the week) is $32 per person on the Legoland website. That is less than the cost of 2 visits per person! There is something for all ages at Legoland Discovery Center. Just looking at the Master Creations is awe inspiring and will forever change the way you view Lego's (and your humble creations done at home!). There is a Dragon Cave ride that every child loves to do over and over (if the line isn't too long). There is even a photo op booth for the ride to capture your visit in print. Head upstairs for a very inexpensive fresh snack and to ride the Mechanical Swings. Pedal, pedal, pedal and your swing will take up higher and higher as the ride spins around. There are Lego creation stations for all ages upstairs so plan on spending a while as your children explore. You can enter their Lego building contests offered every hour or so and even see how Lego's are manufactured in their 'Lego Lab'. There is a 3-D movie that comes complete with snow and water shown several times an hour. Hours are Noon-7 Monday through Friday and 10-8 on weekends with special holiday hours posted on their website. Wholesome, inspiring entertainment for the whole family.

You love Ikea for their inexpensive, do it yourself, home improvement projects, especially for your childrens space, but did you know you could even pull off a date night IN Ikea? If you have potty trained children, there is a fabulous play area in the Ikea stores, where you drop off your children (1 hour maximum) for FREE! They are supervised by trained child care workers and have lots of fun things for kids to do inside. Once you have dropped them off, you and your significant other can head to the dining area and have a quiet meal (cafeteria style) for under $10 easily! That means you can have a sitter for an hour and dinner for less than $10 - now that's a deal! Tuesday's they offer $2.49 Swedish meatball meals (trust me, for $2.49 it is fantastic!), Wednesday is $7.99 bbq rib night and there are other specials on other nights. If you want to make it a family outing and do a little shopping then you can drop the kids off, shop, load the car, come back and get the kids and then enjoy the 99cent kids meals as a family and let your kids enjoy the play area and special childrens tables in the dining room. Also look for coupons for FREE or 99cent meals in your paper and mailed flyer packs on a regular basis. I see them at least twice a month. Ikea is located in Schaumburg (just north of Woodfield Mall off of Golf) and in Bolingbrook (west of 355).

If you like Brazilian churasscaria style dining and want to bring your kids then visit Texas de Brazil (on Ohio St. downtown Chicago or Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg). At Texas, kids under 7 eat FREE, children 7-21 eat for half price! At $40 a person, that is significant savings. This is their standard children's offer, no coupons or time limits involved. If you leave hungry at Texas it is your own fault. The salad bar is a meal in itself, loaded with fresh vegetable, salami, proscuitto, cheeses, soup, sushi, smoked salmon, salads of all sorts. What kid won't love their sauteed Plantains, brought to your table as a side. They are so good they are like dessert. A Day Out With Thomas

Does your little one love Thomas - ALL things Thomas? Thomas is one character that reaches beyond age and gender and enraptures the heart of all who watch him. Each August, the REAL Thomas comes to Union, Illinois for two action packed weekends. The REAL Thomas engine comes to the Illinois Railway Museum in Union (off of 90 between Schaumburg & Rockford). Entry to the Museum is free but rides on Thomas cost approx. $16 per person for a 20 minute journey. You and your children will ride in authentic antique railcars being pulled by a HUGE blue Thomas engine that whistles and bats his eyes. Thomas isn't the only attraction - there are tons of restored and well preserved railcars from bygone eras that you can tour. Sir TopemHat is there for photo opportunities. There are bouncy inflatables for all ages, push carts, magicians, musicians, arts and crafts tents and very reasonably priced food. This is an event you could turn into an annual vacation almost. Your children will be entertained all day and love every moment of the Thomas experience. There is also an 'all things Thomas' toy tent with the biggest selection of Thomas related toys you have ever seen. The weather usually cooperates and parking is free. About 1.5 hours from Chicago in moderate traffic but absolutely worth the drive. I also highly recommend stopping by Donley's Wild West Town on your way home for a little more excitement and fantastic food. If you are looking for area hotels there are a few inexpensive ones in Union, Woodstock and neighboring East Dundee.

Lombard is way more kid friendly and more tame humor wise. Monday-Thursday 12-3 they offer $4.99 Meals in the Yorktown location and on Tuesday's and Sunday's after 5pm they offer Family Night featuring a $5 menu! Don't worry if your kids don't have the best table manners in Ed's - it's kind of an anything goes restaurant with delicious diner style food. You don't have to go very far to give your kids a taste of nostalgia. The Choo Choo Hamburgers on Wheels has been around since 1951 and is located at 600 Lee Street in Des Plaines (thechoochoo.com). Open from 10:30 to 3 most days (Thursday and Friday until 8pm) you and your kids will delight in the food brought out on a circular track that runs around the dining bar. There are also booths which give you more comfort and a view, but there is nothing like sitting right in front of the train as it passes. There is a free kiddie ride in the restaurant as well. The place is VERY small and always crowded so don't be offended if there is a little bit of a wait. They ONLY take CASH! But not to worry, the prices are extremely reasonable and the menu, of course, caters to kids with hot dogs, hamburgers, shakes and fries.

Growing up in the late 1970's I was so fortunate enough to become acquainted with the ever luscious treat known as Orange Julius. For many of you, however, you might say "Orange What"???? On rainy and cold days (or hot days) there is place to go for indoor fun. With multiple Chicagoland locations Pump It Up offers just what mommy needs - a place to read and relax while your kids run, scream and have fun. Each Pump It Up is independently operated so hours and rates can vary. Each of the locations have drop in times (I would highly recommend a reservation if at all possible) where kids can bounce and play for about an hour and a half for $10. Some are morning slots, family evenings and occassional weekends. Don't forget to bring your socks! If you are feeling adventurous you can even go for a slide yourself! PS - The Eastman location in Chicago is off of Halsted just south of North Avenue.

Prices are very reasonable and one-hour prior to the concert they offer face painting, arts and crafts and instrument demonstrations in the Rotunda. This is a wonderful way to introduce your child to classical music in a way that is engaging and fun, not boring. You would be amazed at what you could learn too! At Halloween and Christmas they offer NOT-TO-BE-MISSED concerts. I swear these will become a tradition in your family. There are dancers and puppetry and readings at all of the concerts. No matter the age your children will adore the shows and the music. Even if you didn't think you liked symphony music you will change your tone as well. This is symphony like you have never seen.

Donley's Wild West Town

Are you ready for something SOOOO different and willing to drive about an hour to get there? Tired of all the same old same old for your kids and wish there was something more 'traditional and wholesome' for them to try? Take a drive to Union, IL (off of 90 @20, almost to Rockford) for a LOT of old fashioned fun. When was the last time you panned for gold? When was the last time your kid rode ponies? Shot a cork gun? Rode in a kayak? Watched a Wild West saloon fight? Rode a gas powered mini-train? Sat in a Stage Coach? Cranked a Hand Pulley Cart? Even tried their hand at a lasso? Yes, this is only a little over an hour away from Chicago. Since the activities at Donley's Wild West are outdoors it is a seasonal venue for the activity area, but their fantastic, rustic restaurant is open year round. The restaurant offers terrific food at reasonable prices and is served in an authentic western style lodge with memorabilia like wagon wheels, bison heads, etc. all over the place. Your kids will be delighted with the wild west theme and will welcome a delicious meal after a long day in the activity park. It is the best family fun you will have and the drive is well worth it. The admission is $15 per person with children under 2 free. You can make an overnight of it and visit the Illinois Railway Museum just up the road a fer piece (about 10 minutes). In August the life size Thomas the Train visits there. I would recommend staying in Woodstock or Dundee (10 minute drive) where plenty of reasonably priced hotels are located. Very nostalgic, truly memorable.

Kids Table for Tikes Cooking Classes

Located at 2337 West North Avenue is a surprising fun little place called Kids Table (kids-table.com). For $25 (or less for a series), you can sign your boys and girls up for a one-on-one kid friendly cooking class that lasts a little over an hour. Classes are several days a week, including Saturdays. Your child will prepare from scratch a healthy two-course meal and then eat it. Kids table even sends you home with a laminated recipe card to recreate the dishes at home. The kids cut their own produce, measure their own spices, do the mixing AND the clean up too! They really have a fun time creating their own meals and relish in the sense of accomplishment that comes from eating it. The staff makes gourmet coffee for mom and dad to enjoy while they are waiting. There is a good selection of reasonably priced kitchen items for adults and children in their small shop located up front. What a great idea for a kids party and an even better idea to help your child understand healthful food preparation. Plenty of street parking in the area!

Fantasy Kingdom

Fantasy Kingdom is a fun venue for your little ones to dress up and live in a make believe world whether it be a fire station, grocery store, kitchen, park slide, doll house or jail. Loaded with colorful vingettes for kids to enter and be creative in Fantasy Kingdom is a world of fun for them while you relax and watch. They are located at 1422 N. Kingsbury in an industrial building. You CANNOT see their business from the street, you have to go up a few steps inside and through a parking garage (not far) to get in. They do have $5 all day indoor parking in the garage or you can park on Kingsbury IF you can find a spot. There is a kitchen area with a refrigerator so you are welcome to bring your lunch to enjoy during your play break. The seating could be far more comfortable for parents, but again, it's all about the kids having fun! The entry price is $12 for a day of unlimited fun, infants are free and siblings enter at a reduced rate. Punch cards with 10 visits are available for $100. They also sell a reasonable priced selection of drinks and snacks as well as pretty bows and costumes. Hours are typically 9-5 Monday through Friday with weekends and evenings reserved for parties, although I have seen some parties during the week as well. Friendly staff with VERY good memories, so don't be surprised if they remember your face or name after just a visit or two!

Family Grounds Cafe

All of us have heard of Family Grounds Cafe located at 3652 North Lincoln in Chicago, but many of us are just stepping out for our first visit. Literally located just below the Addison/Lincoln El Stop it is not only convenient to public transportation but also has a FREE parking lot if you drive! The great news is that Family Grounds has fabulous coffees, teas, drinks for mom and dad and plenty for kids and they also have a good selection of pastries and healthy sandwiches and 'alternative' chips. The play area is delightful with a Victorian Cottage, a Pet Hospital, a work table and a Little School Room. There is a separate area for the tiniest of visitors. The space is well lit, SUPER clean and carpeted so only sock feet are allowed (socks are mandatory!). The price is right at $7.95 for the first child-almost half of the other local play areas plus you can relax with a warm cup of coffee and read a book or work on your laptop. If they are busy they enforce a 1.5 hour time limit, if not, it is flexible. After 2 hours your tike will be worn out anyway. The only bummer is they are open from 9-5 Monday through Friday and 9-1 on Saturdays. Don't they realize we would love to hang out at night (maybe an 8pm closing) and later in the day on Saturdays too! They are really missing out on some big business closing so early. Working parents barely have a chance to visit on those hours. The other suggestion is a Community Board. As a parent I LOVE to look at other opportunities for my child whether it be dance, language, babysitters, etc. A community board is the ideal place for them to share that and Family Grounds has plenty of room.

Have you ever seen these crazy little dots for art called Pixo's? They come in a variety of colors, several different methods to use to apply them to a template and several storage options. They are actually an art project that will keep your children (age 4 and up I recommend) occupied for hours as they drop dot after colorful dot in place until they complete the picture. It is similar to a paint-by-number concept except it drops these plastic dots on the colored template. Once your design is complete you spray it with 'magic chemicals' AKA H2O and in a few hours your dots emerge tightly connected to one another forming the exact picture on the template. It is an investment well worth the hours it will happily occupy your child during the cold winter. Once you buy the initial starter pack (the basic set with the manual pen is best. There are some that are mechanical but I don't like the idea of 'shooting' plastic beads)for about $15 you can add additional templates and 'dots' for $4.99 to $9.99. It appears to be as cathartic for boys as it is for girls. You can purchase Pixo's at Target, ToysRUs, online, Wal-Mart.

They have a grand selection of bows, ribbons, and...TOYS! They actually have a good selection of moderately priced toys that are a treat for your child or make an inexpensive birthday gift when you are in a rush. They also carry quality hair care products for you or your child (including an effective lice treatment regimine). The real draw for kids is their 'car' style seats that feature Volkswagen Beetles, Jeep's, Roadsters, Race Cars, etc. They get to choose from a huge selection of DVD's and your stylist pops in the video of their choice while they sit incredibly still for the duration of the cut. If you never thought your child would sit still for a haircut, give it a try. It is an amazing phenomenon, regardless of age. They don't even budge once they are in the car with the DVD on. It's hard to imagine that your little one could love the art museum but at the Art Institute, they do everything in their power to make art interactive, understandable and approachable for the young mind. Brace yourself for an interesting collection of bohemian liberal sorts (think Earth Mother) and decidedly urban dwellers. There is a narrative, then a tour of a gallery exhibit with explanation and then back to the studios to create an art project. The Mini-Masters and Family Workshops are on Saturdays from 10:30am to 11:30am and are FREE with your admission to the Institute (admission can be free with the pass from your local library!). The studios are located just to the left of admissions in the new Modern Wing. They have multiple brochures for children that help you take your budding minds on a tour of the museum that is not only kid friendly, but informative. You will find yourself being educated and possibly enjoying the art more than you ever knew you could. Programs run year-round. I suggest logging on to their website or picking up a brochure at any of the 'tourist' brochure stands throughout Chicago. This is an activity you will feel good about once you have done it because it broadens your horizons and enriches your childrens lives.

Free Museum Days!!

Yes, there are a multitude of FREE days at all of the museums (outside of your local library passes)! Admissions are getting outrageous and most of us don't want to spend $200 a year for family memberships to all of the museums. How smart someone would be to come up with a co-op pass for ALL the museums and let a family join for one fee and use all the museums, all year. I would pay $350 for that privilege for a family of four. One stop shopping. But, until someone comes up with a brilliant idea like that, here are some of the free days at area museums. Just a reminder - FREE days sometimes are limited to General Admission only and do NOT include all the upgraded special exhibits. Many times these are offered at a discount on free days.

It's hard to believe that there is actually a great value in shopping for toys for kids. Build-A-Bear Workshop offers one of the best programs around to make you feel better about the money you are spending. Their animals are adorable and their clothes irresistible, but you can actually get 10% back for every dime you spend plus tons of heavily discounted offers and coupons for joining their "Stuff For Stuff" membership. Once you purchase $100 you receive a $10 gift certificate via the U.S. mail or email, whichever you designate. Plus, about 2 times a month you will get email offers for discounted animals, clothes or even $5 off coupons. You can always find $5 off a $25 purchase coupons at Navy Pier, Children's Museum and hotel lobby brochure stands. When you add that with a special offer and a $10 gift certificate you can save a bundle! These animals are ageless, everyone loves them, young and old. I recommend no younger than 3 years old, however, as they don't seem to appreciate the process of making the animal and dressing it. This is also one of the few stores that allow you to combine coupons for maximum savings. They get bonus points with me for allowing that!

Lego Store Northbridge

Your local Lego Store has wonderful FREE building events the 2nd Tuesday of every month. At 5pm your child can build the item of the month and take it home FREE. Their knowledgeable builders will walk you through the assembly and give you a description card to take home. While you are there you can peruse their sale area in the back far corner of the store and ogle the massive creations Master Lego Builders have created. There is a Lego Store in Northbridge on the 3rd level by the escalators and one in Woodfield on the upper level down the way from Macy's.

Woodfield Mall

Woodfield Mall has a phenomenal play area located outside of the lower level of Macy's. It opened in the Fall of 2008 and features a huge display of spongey soft Looney Tune characters that kids can jump over, slide over, climb on and run around. It is clean, colorful and loads of fun. There is a Rainforest on the same level for fun food after playing or you can opt for the FREE kids meal with adult meal purchase at Stir Crazy also on the lower level by Sears. Upstairs you can let your kids watch TV in Gymboree while you do a little browsing. The Lego Store across from Gymboree offers a small activity bin for your little ones. Down the hall from Lego is the Build A Bear store with the cutest of cute animals and outfits. There is also a create your own car store and a Disney store. A great day of fun at no cost to mom and dad(as long as you don't shop!).

A cheap and fun suburban outing

Guess what is cheap and fun and located in Bolingbrook and Schaumburg? It's open early, late and 7 days a week - Ikea! Yes, Ikea can be more than just shopping for household items. First, they have a wonderful FREE day care area. You can drop your kids off for one hour free of charge, sit and have coffee, read a magazine, shop, whatever you want. You get a break for free and your kids get to have a blast. Ikea has SUPER cheap, good quality kids meals at 99cents, yes less than $1, including a drink! You can eat for about $4 with a drink. So, for around $5 you can have lunch, entertain your kids, take a break and shop. Great value and a fun adventure during the cold winter days.

The local library is for far more than borrowing books. Did you know that with a free Library membership you can get FREE passes to most of the museums/zoos around Chicago? Each Library has free passes for BASIC admission to Brookfield Zoo, MCA, Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Art Institute, and so on. They are limited as to how many they have and are on an 'as available' basis. The best times to find a pass are Monday through Wednesday when people turn them in after weekend usage.

Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder

While we are on the topic of pizza, I hope you have tried the Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder located at 2121 North Clark. This is a legendary icon of a place with a warm, medieval interior and typically a very long line! They only take cash so be forewarned. There is nothing else like their 'upside down' meat filled pizza pie (literally like a pie). Doughy, seasoned to perfection, with lots of gooey cheese. Their flatbread is a hit with even the smallest diner, as you tear off pieces of parmesean/oregano encrusted pieces of the chewy bread. For under $40 you can get a flatbread, salad that is large enough to share with 3 or 4 people and a small grinder pizza along with drinks. It is a very good value for an extremely tasty meal. PS - the ambiance makes for a great date night too!

Kid Friendly Museums

This post deals specifically with museum activities that are super kid friendly and often free. Other posts will give you general museum free days. First is the Children's Museum located in Navy Pier. On Thursdays from 5-8pm and the 1st Sunday of every month (childrens entrance fee) it is FREE! On the second Saturday of every month from 11am-3pm the Museum of Contemporary Art at Chicago Avenue behind Water Tower, offers an activity packed FREE family day with arts and crafts that are very unique, a scavenger hunt with prizes and a relaxation area for families loaded with free juice, water, and Target brand snacks for everyone. It is a MUST from October-May to keep the kids active even on the coldest Saturday. The Art Institute also has varying free children's classes on Saturdays with paid admission for the adults. You must sign up in advance to attend but you won't be disappointed in the almost 2 hour interactive learning experience for your children. Best entrance is on Monroe by the new Modern Wing as the studio is by the admissions desk. Take a look at the artic.edu site for more information and scheduling.

Navy Pier is a wonderful place to explore with your children. There is an abundance of coupons for all sorts of Chicagoland activities right behind the information desk as you walk in. Ever changing events and performers keep the venue fresh. Every weekend there is an assortment of entertainment on the Family Pavillion Stage just as you walk in, for free! There are lots of inexpensive dining choices as well. On Thursdays from 5-8 the Children's Museum is FREE! This is the deluxe kiddie spa for girls of all ages. On Tuedays you get SUPER CHEAP haircuts for kids - boys and girls alike in the spalike setting. In addition to the cut your little one will get glitter stars applied and a lollipop. For the money you save on the service on Tuesday you can spend on a plethora of cute, cute, cute accessories and salon products. The decor is lime green and hot pink. Even your little boy will sit still to watch their tv in this beautiful environment. For girls they offer manicures, pedicures, mini facials, hair cuts, hair styles, makeovers and runway shows for parties. They also have packages available. The services are as quality as any you would receive in a mommy spa but at a fraction of the price since it is geared towards children. After you are done you can pop over to Chuck E Cheese located in the same center as the location on Fullerton (between Damen & Clybourn in RiverPoint Center) or to Starbucks (2 doors down for mom). The Oakbrook location is in the new Promenade across from the Yorktown Mall (on 22nd Street between Meyers and Highland). So special... you won't be disappointed.

Mall Play Areas Around Chicago

With temperatures not so 'park friendly' anymore a great way to relax and get your kids out for some exercise is to head to an indoor play area in one the local malls. You can bring a magazine, catch up on your emails while you relax on one of the benches while your children run, scream and play with other kids. Northbrook Court has a wonderful tree house play area located outside of the Land Of Nod/Banana Republic entrances. Corner Bakery is steps away and just upstairs is a childrens hair salon. Yorktown Mall in Lombard offers a $1 train ride with seasonally changing scenery, a tree house slide and a small house for the tiny tots. It is located just outside Carson Pirie Scott's lower level and in close proximity to several childrens clothing stores and Mrs. Fields Cookies (Caribou Coffee for mom!). If you feel like driving a little the best of the best is at Fox Valley Mall in Aurora. They have not one but 2 play areas, one geared to tiny tots, one for 3 and up that is a 2 story net enclosed climbing tree and a DOUBLE DECKER CAROUSEL. For a day of fun you can grab some food court goodies, play a couple of the claw games and work your way between the 2 play areas and carousel. Everyone will have good cheap fun if you are willing to make the drive.

Not so clean - Homer's Wilmette

I would say I am pretty picky about clean, especially when it comes to my food, particularly what I serve to my children. For those of you who frequently Homer's on Green Bay Road in Wilmette, take a good hard look next time you are there. The kids love the coin machines and ice cream and we love the prices but I am afraid the price might end up being to high in terms of health. I am shocked the health department hasn't cited them or closed them down. On more than one occassion the ceiling has been literally falling in (kitchen and dining area both) with buckets all over the floor and water dripping from the ceiling. The tables, chairs and floor, including the food trays are always dirty and grimey no matter what time of day you go in. If that is what is in the front can you imagine what the kitchen looks like! The cashier is also handling food without washing their hands after touching the money or switching into plastic gloves. Hey Homer's, why not clean up your act so we can come back!

Sanrio/Hello Kitty! Northbridge

Hello Kitty ! on the third level in Northbridge Michigan Avenue offers a real treat few know about. Outside of their whimsical Kitty inspired accessories, they offer a $1 spin on the wheel (located behind the register). Depending on where you land you get to select a grab bag with a wonderful treat inside worth way more than the $1 it costs to take a spin. Kids love it and you should try it to for fun. They have tablets, stickers, binders, stampers, pencils, etc. inside the mystery bags. There is also a dice game for $2 that offers the same grab bag fun. In this economy it is a great way to get the kids out without breaking the bank and letting them come home with a new treasure.

Dizzying School Choices

It is THAT time of year, and if you have a child entering into grades K-1 for the first time you know exactly what I mean! The horrors of applying to 20 or more schools in hopes that at least one will want your little muffin only to be nixed by all but the last possible choice and past the cut-off to apply anywhere else. I know the economy is not the best right now and a lot of us are eyeing public school options when we swore our child would never set foot on their soil. Please give our followers some feed back on some of the more obscure public schools that you LOVE, and have actually attended yourself, not via word of mouth. I am personally big on LaSalle Language Academy if you live in the Gold Coast, Lincoln Park or River North/West. There are also a few highly affordable, super safe, clean and cutting edge private schools that sometimes get overlooked as well. DayStar, at 15th and State, is a great choice pre-school and up with a Christian influence. They have a very urban approach to their curriculum in a cool, new building. Another newbie is Christian Heritage Academy, part of Park Community Church on Crosby, close to Japonaise. It is part of the parent school in Northfield and the newer one in Arlington Heights. The focus is on a Christian based curriculum in an urban environment. Great location and a new building for their launch in Fall 2010.

Does your child really want to dance but you aren't sure where the best dance studio is? Your kids will love IntrigueDance.com. The studio is located on the second floor at 1234 S. Michigan and is a quick bus stop, Red Line Train Stop, taxi ride, or affordable street parking away. It was opened by Pia and Justin Hamilton in 2008. They are incredibly kid friendly while offering serious dance instruction. The class sizes are small so your child will get the attention they need. The instructors are all professional dancers and Pia was even a CHILD STAR ON BARNEY! So, if you want your kids ready to perform, who would know better than a former child performer herself! The prices are reasonable, not cheap, but you will absolutely get your monies worth and your kids WILL want to go back each week. They offer a wide selection of classes from tiny tots to adults. I like it because I can go a block away, grab a Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, and read my paper in their comfortable waiting room. Ahhh.

They typically run several a year and offer face painting, balloon twister, crafts and story time for the kids. Another great family opportunity at Macy's is the Christmas with Santa and Easter with the Easter Bunny brunches. They will create memories that last a lifetime, your kids will have a blast in a safe environment and you will have a great sit down meal.
